Large Pair Early 1900's Portuguese MAJOLICA Wall Pockets
    Measure 12" x 10.5" x 2.5"

Olfaire majolica is earthenware with highly molded surfaces and lead glazes (some more colorful than others). Majolica was produced mainly in England and later, Portugal. These were two of the biggest areas that produced majolica work. England is where the style was developed by Minton. Olfaire was started in Portugal by Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro in 1884.

These two very large wall pockets are very different as most of Olfaire's pieces were whimsical; usually featuring fruit, veggies or animals. These are more of a traditional, elegant floral design, which is usually found more with French majolica. These wall pockets were very popular during the art deco period across all the different regions.

Although Olfaire is still in business, the pieces that they produce today are not of the same quality level and craftsmanship as these. The older pieces, like these, have a more artistic touch to them. These beautiful hand painted wall pockets measure approximately 12" long. The artisan hand-poured the clay into a mold and then cleaned them up by hand instead of being fully machine made like you find today. Evidence of them being hand made can be seen by the existing stilt marks on the back of them from when they were kiln fired.

Both have the Olfaire/Portugal stamped in-mold mark on the backs. There is residue from a previous sticker on the back of one.

They are truly pieces of art pottery history.

One of the wall pockets has an inch hairline crack to the interior of the pocket opening; very minor and does not go through to the outer, front (see photo). I only mention this to be precise about its condition. They have some crazing from their age.

The top portion of the flower has a very deep, midnight blue glaze with magenta, yellow, and brown glazes at the middle of the flower. The midnight blue glaze blends into the off white area giving testament to the artistic, hand made nature of this outstanding craftsmanship.

Together, before packaging, they weigh roughly 5 pounds. They will be double-boxed with peanuts and bubble wrapped for protection.
