About Sascha Brastoff:
Born: Cleveland, OH – October 12, 1918
Died: West LA, CA – February 4, 1993
Sascha Brastoff, birth name Samuel Brostofsky, led a very full and interesting life. He had multiple talents. He was a dancer with the Cleveland Ballet, a window display designer for Macy’s in New York, a ceramist, a sculptor, a fabric designer, a costume designer, & a jewelry designer. He designed war bond posters & murals while serving in the Air Force in Miami during WW II as a mechanic, & designed & entertained for 20th Century Fox Studios. You may recall his comical interpretations of his friend, the famous, Carmen Miranda. Hollywood loved him incl. his lifetime friend and customer, Joan Crawford. In 1947, Winthrop Rockefeller commissioned Brastoff to paint a mural for his Manhattan apt. which began their lifelong friendship. As Brastoff’s business grew, Rockefeller invested in his enterprise & his award winning studio/factory, designed by A. Quincy Jones, & the business flourished with the production of vases, bowls, ashtrays, & ceramic dinnerware.
